What is LCM at The Edge?

The easy answer is, we are the Lutheran Campus Ministry (LCM) on the edge of campus. The more complicated answer involves Episcopalians, a hammer, and 50 pounds of coffee.

The current LCM Fearless Leader is Alice Connor, an Episcopal priest. Don't fear her--Episcopalians are a gentle people. Fond of incense, funny robes, and ambiguity, but gentle nonetheless.

Martin Luther founded the Lutheran denomination 'round about 1517 (somewhat accidentally) by nailing his 95 frustrations (others say "Theses") on the door of his local church. Hence the hammer. Brother Martin tells us that salvation is through God's grace alone. Absolutely nothing we can do will earn us a place in the Kingdom. What a relief! Doesn't mean we can't try to save the world as a huge "thank ye kindly."

We rely on a radical hospitality and inclusivity at the Edge House. We are an interdenominational lot: Chris Bean the Nazarene (barista extraordinaire) and Jamie Noyd the literary pilgrim (and member of the Lutheran Church, Missouri Synod) share our office space. Our students are Lutheran, Episcopal, Catholic, formerly-Catholic, Methodist, formerly-Quaker, and Pagan. Students, faculty, and staff of UC from all denominations, faiths, and lack-of-faiths are welcome at The Edge.

Our mission is to provide a safe, hospitable place for faith-wrestling, doubt, conversation, and napping. The house itself has many spaces to relax, study, play, and converse. We have WiFi, delicious and directly-traded free coffee (and excellent tea), an extensive religious library, and the Listening Bench on the MLK side of the house. Come down to the edge of campus and check us out.

Where We Are

You ever notice no one gives directions anymore? Used to, you would get something like, “Drive down Clifton ‘bout a mile or so, pass that old building where that coffee shop where Jim worked used to be, take a left at Old Man’s Tree, and you can’t miss it. If you hit Graeter’s, you’ve gone too far.” Now we just Google it.

The Edge House is at 3007 Clifton Avenue. If you don’t want to Google it, try this: we’re at the corner of Martin Luther King and Clifton Ave which is cattycorner from the DAAP Works, across the road from Burnet Woods Park (the grassy lawn bit, not the trees), and right next to a urologist. Also, the map photo above is the city’s description of our property lines—that help?
